Most fungal nail infections develop fron athlete's foot infections of the skin. If skin infections are left untreated then the fungal spores eventually infect the nails too.

So it is important to treat any athlete's foot immediately with an antifungal cream such as Lamisil, which is the only treatment on the market that actually kills the fungal spores. All the rest just interfere with the fungal spore life cycle which is 21 days, hence you need to use them for three weeks after the infection has cleared, or reinfection may occur.
